Is the American Way of Life…Getting in the way of Life?

Filed under: The Helping Hand — admin @ 11:53 pm

After the attack on 9-11 we oft heard the urging of our leaders
to just return to our “way of life” as a means of foiling the
effect of terrorism. Essentially this may be sound wisdom but in
particular it is not, if our way of life is excessive partying,
blatant immorality and indulgent concupiscence. OK, I’ll use a
more common vernacular. How does goofing off fight terrorism?

Whether angry American workers who go on killing rampages in the
workplace have gone “ballistic” or “postal”, isn’t it terrorism
by any other name? While we fear the idea of someone poisoning
our water or using lethal chemicals in our public places has
anyone been on a college campus lately? There our youth are
blending academic pursuits with the kind of alcohol abuse that
would make all the combined pubs of Ireland and brew houses of
Germany glow with a blush. A good number of these students have
lost their lives to their binges, why doesn’t this qualify as a
chemical attack on our youth? Or should we think of this as only
just another facet of our ‘way of life?’ Is successfully keeping
prayer out of our schools while miserably failing to keep guns
and drugs out of them, our ‘way of life’? If the answer to any
of these questions is no, shouldn’t we be looking for some
definition for the phrase that might give it some vindication?

Although it is just a personal observation, I would challenge
other Americans to make note of the fact that most people can’t
be faulted for asking the wrong questions, but rather they are
not asking any questions at all. When is the last time you heard
people asking serious questions about life in a roaring party?
If the adage that “Americans play as hard as they work” is true
then consider this. No one has time at work to ask life’s
serious questions and no one at a party has an inclination too
ask.

I live in one of America’s premiere party cities, New Orleans.
The hub for most of the partying in New Orleans is the French
Quarter and within that space is another hub called, Bourbon
Street. Anyone who has lived in this city and more specifically
in the Quarter has learned one thing. Eventually if you expect
to accomplish anything at all or even think about accomplishing
something you must move away from the hub. There is an obvious
analogy here for all of America.

Perhaps the single best source to find a definition for “the
American Way of Life” would come from the mouths of those who
are putting their lives on the line to preserve that way of
life, American soldiers. They would all gladly give you a clear
definition if asked, even though they may not be aware they were
doing just that. If you were to ask any soldier in Iraq or
Afghanistan what he or she planned to do when they returned home
again you would have your definition. Yes, the first thing they
would say would be something like; I’m going to have the biggest
party of my life. No one would question that; in fact most of us
would lend a hand to get that party going. But no soldier would
say that was all he wanted to do. As Paul Harvey would say, “and
now here is the rest of the story”. Depending on each individual
soldier you may hear, I’m going home to marry my sweetheart and
start a family, or I’m going to start my own business or finish
school. Some might say they were going back to help their
families or become builders, preachers, scientists, or
politicians. The list is endless but it is this list that
defines what we know as “the American way of Life”.

The mindless pursuit of power, fame or fortune are all thought
to be at the top of the list under the heading of “The American
Way of Life” But let’s take another look based on the answers of
our own fighting men and a stern warning from the pages of the
Bible. There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end
therof are the ways of death. Proverbs 16:25 KJV

A Guide to Choosing the Best Home Based Business for You!

A Guide to Choosing the Best Home Based Business for You! -
Mark Williams ©

What if I told you the best home based business for you was
right around the corner just waiting. You would most likely say
“Yeah Right” and then pull down the imaginary wall of skepticism
in front of you. That is O.K.; it’s perfectly natural and
understandable. It is my intention to help you find that perfect
work at home opportunity that fits your personality and
lifestyle.

Within the context of this article I am going to give you an
easy to follow guide, or set of things to look for, to find the
best home based business for you and your lifestyle.

There are several factors to look for when trying to decide on a
home based business. They range from investment costs to time
constraints and other factors in between. I am going to give you
the basics of what to look for in deciding on a home business.

RESEARCH

The most important thing to do is research. Researching the
company extensively is vital in choosing a business opportunity.
Find out how long they have been in business. I like to use the
5 year rule - it is a good measuring stick to see if a company
is for real or just a fleeting fad.

Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has
any negative comments or complaints. If it is an internet based
company read the forums and posts to see what people are saying
about them.

You need to be careful with forums and posts because some people
in them have ulterior motives. Usually, anyone with common sense
can read through those fairly easily. Always remember to keep an
open mind when reading posts and forums.

If it is a company that sells products and services, then learn
more about their products and see how they compare to leaders in
that industry. You want to make sure that you are going to
promote quality and reputable products and services. The last
thing you want to do is jump in with a company and realize that
their products are a joke and that selling them is going to be
almost impossible.

ASK QUESTIONS

Now that you have done your homework and know all about the
company it is time to start asking questions. These questions
should be answered before you invest:

1. What is their compensation plan and how does it compare to
the industry average? Find out when they send checks and how
often if you are working on commission. I have been caught
before investing money advertising a product only to find out
that I was not going to receive a check for my sales for 90 days.

2. Ask them about their support program. What tools are they
going to provide you with to help you become successful? All
quality home based businesses, including MLM, know that the more
successful you are, the more profitable they become.

3. Ask them if they are going to provide you with proven
advertisements and marketing methods. You must be able to
promote the business or it will fail miserably!!

4. Ask them if they handle all customer support and shipping. If
they do, that it is a feather in their cap. That means that you
do not have to worry about dealing with customer complaints and
shipping troubles.

Do not be afraid to call the company and ask them these
questions. A legitimate company will not be hesitant to answer
them. Calling them establishes that they are a real entity with
real people working the business.

TALK TO OTHER DISTRIBUTORS

See if you can get into contact with other distributors for the
company and ask them about their experiences with the company.

1. Do they pay on time?

2. Find out if they really provide the kind of support they
advertise.

3. Inquire about the number of refunds and chargebacks that they
get each month. Additionally, find out how many of their
customers are repeat customers that order monthly.

The distributors are more likely to give you real world answers
to these types of questions. If they are willing, the
distributors can give you a really good feel for how good the
company is to work with.

At this point you need to take all of the information you have
gathered and review it. A quality home based business meets the
following requirements:

1. They have a higher than industry average compensation plan.
2. They have a minimal number of bad business complaints. 3.
They pay on time. 4. The company offers excellent support to
their distributors. 5. The company offers a full-time income
opportunity. 6. They sell quality products or services. 7. They
must have quality customer service.

If all of these questions have been answered in a positive way
and you have an interest in the business, then the opportunity
is legitimite.

Make sure that you have an interest in the business that you are
looking into. In order to be successful, you must, at the very
least, be interested in it. If the desire is not there, it
doesn’t matter how good the company is - you will fail!

I hope you can take these tips and use them as a guide to
finding the best home based business for you. Working at home
has several benefits and few negative aspects, especially if you
are a stay at home parent. So, I encourage you to use these
guidelines and go out and get the financial freedom that you are
looking for!

Google AdWords - A Quick Overview for Beginners

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:41 pm

First of all, you know as well that Google is still the #1 Search Engine in the net, leaving Overture at the second place. If you type a word or a phrase in Google’s search box and press “enter”, a large number of links will appear in front of you, related to the subject you’ve typed earlier.

Take a look at the right hand side of the main page. There should be another group of links complete with their descriptions, right? Only, these ones are much smaller than those main link results. What is the difference?

Do you see the subtitle: Sponsored Links? Those link results on the right hand side is called Google AdWords. People bid a certain price to Google to put their links on there everytime visitors search for related keywords. Those advertisers are only paying for the numbers of click-throughs to their links. This kind of advertising is called the Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising.

In order to reach a higher position in the link results, Google has set up a unique formula. Let’s say you want to put your link in Google AdWords and you bid for “flowers” as your main keyword. You are not the only one who bid for that keyword. There are lots of people who also bid for it, since they also want to promote their “flowers” sites!

The unique formula of Google AdWords is that you can’t reach the #1 position only by increasing your bidding price. Google also considers your Click Through Rate (CTR). CTR is a value that represents how many click-throughs (clicks on your ad) you get among your ad’s impressions. Too many difficult words?

OK, let’s try it this way… Impressions is the frequency of your ad’s appearance in the search engine’s result page. If your ad appears 500 times, than your ad’s impression is 500. But, of course you don’t get a click everytime your ad shows up. From those 500 impressions, perhaps you only get 1 click. This makes your CTR = 1/500 = 0.002 = 0.2%

The better the CTR you have for an ad, the lower you have to bid for the same position.

That means, Google also rewards the good content of your ad. When your ad gets a lot of click-throughs, that means you have a good ad and Google rewards you for that! Your ad is good according to Google if your ad is relevant with the content of your site.

In Google AdWords, the rich ones don’t always win - the smart ones do!

Of course there are still a lot of things we haven’t touch regarding Google AdWords, but we have to do it later. After all, this is a quick overview for beginners, right?

France - Bordeaux and St. Tropez

Filed under: Travel — admin @ 9:39 am

France and Paris, Paris and France. You’ll have a great time
exploring Paris, but you’ll miss places like Bordeaux and St.
Tropez if you don’t get out of the city.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is both a city and the center of the wine region in
France. As a city, Bordeaux is surprisingly bereft of things to
see. One can find unique statutes, fountains and the like, but
there isn’t really a particular location to mark of on your, “I
saw that” list. The city is, however, a good place to relax,
drink and eat. For relaxation, you can put around this low key
town and take in food at the outdoor cafes in the Place de la
Comedie. The specialty food of the region are canellas, which
are very good. If you’re with the wine and cheese crowd,
Bordeaux is going to seem much more exciting. The surrounding
region produces wine by the mega cask loads and you can visit
locations such as Chateau Mouton-Rothschild to smell and taste
the grapes. Moderation is suggested as you want to avoid the
grapes of wrath the next morning!

St. Tropez

St. Tropez has gone through roughly three stages in its history.
Originally, the town was a little fishing village no different
than others dotting the coast of France. At some point, however,
it became the place to be for artist who had given up on Paris.
No less than the painters Matisse, Signac and Seurat lived and
worked in the town. Fortunately or unfortunately, those times
have passed. While artist still populate the town, St. Tropez is
now the hangout of celebrities and the wealthy. While still a
beautiful location, the over the top glitz of St. Tropez is a
bit much.

Once you get out of Paris, your options are wide open when it
comes to exploring France. Bordeaux is definitely worth a visit
while St. Tropez tends to be a take it or leave it destination.
I left it.

How To Play The Violin

Filed under: Entertainment Infos — admin @ 1:35 am

This article gives the essential basics for how to play the violin. Generally violins are quite commonly available instruments and it is reasonably easy to rent or buy a violin. Children may need smaller violins (from an eighth, quarter, half, three-quarters, seven-eighths up to full size) to accommodate smaller hands if they are going to be learning over an extended period.

The Basics

The bow is held in the right hand with the thumb bent underneath the frog to support it and the other hands loosely gripping the wood. There are many different holds and it its important to find one that suits your hand size and strength. The violin is held with the left hand, with the chin on the chin rest supporting most of the weight, and the fingers loosely coiled around the neck of the violin. The thumb should be relaxed but firm. The left elbow should be curved under the violin. The violin should be roughly horizontal and the right arm held high. The main methods of playing the violin are bowed and pizzicato.

Bowed

The bow should be drawn swiftly and smoothly across the strings, about halfway between the fingerboard and the bridge. A down bow starts with the hand close to the strings pulling across the string from left to right, and is generally used on strong beats. An up bow goes the opposite way, right to left, and is used on weaker beats and upbeats. However with practice down bows and up bows should be fairly difficult to distinguish. Slurs in music indicate that all notes within a slur should be played in the same bow movement. To play loud notes, the bow is pressed down harder on the string using the index finger or the bow is drawn across the string faster. To play more quietly use less pressure or draw the bow across the string slower. In classical music bowed music is indicated by the Italian term arco.

Pizzicato

To play pizzicato (often abbreviated to pizz.) the right thumb should be placed under the fingerboard and the index finger used to pull the string quickly upwards and across. For faster passages, the bow can be held while playing pizzicato, still using the index finger but without the support of the thumb. In more complex and advanced pieces, a small cross above the stave indicates the fingers of the left hand plucking the strings.

Fingering and positions

As there are no physical aids such as frets for violinists as there are for guitarists, accurate tuning comes with immense practice. On a full size violin, the tones are roughly two centimeters apart, but this is difficult to judge when playing since you are seeing from a different perspective. To aid tuning, it is very helpful to have a piano or other keyboard instrument when practicing.

The fingers of the left hand are conventionally named first (index finger) to fourth (little finger). When playing notes other than open strings (G, A, D and E), these fingers must press down hard, so that the string is shortened convincingly for a higher pitch. The standard intervals taught to beginners is tone, tone, semitone, tone (ie. G-A-B-C-D, D-E-F#-G-A, A-B-C#-D-E, and E-F#-G#-A-B). Of course the notes in between can be played by rearranging the hand position.

This is known as first position, where the first finger plays up to a tone above the open string. The next position usually taught is third position, where the first finger plays the note a perfect fourth above the open string (so, for example, third position on the A string would start on the D). All positions from first up to anywhere around tenth can be thus played, and two octaves on one string are considered fairly standard.
