Don’t be a predictable online poker player. If you play the same game of poker throughout your time in a tournament, any decent players at the table will take advantage of you. Once someone who knows what he’s doing sees how you play, he’ll be able to exploit that knowledge to deplete your stack. Eventually, someone’s going to figure out how you play, and if you play your poker game right, you can turn that potential disaster into a big advantage. I like to start out a tournament playing exceptionally tight poker-nothing but faces and pocket pairs for the first few betting rounds. All of that folding tells any attentive players that I only like to play premium hands, and showing a strong starting hand at the showdown only serves to reinforce that observation. By the time the blinds have been raised a few times, I change gears and loosen up my game. After the blinds have increased substantially in the tournament, they are worth stealing and my opponents have figured out that I’m a tight player. This makes it a lot easier for me to bluff my way to a few stolen blinds, which will buy me some time until I get me monster hand.
