What Does the Future Hold for VoIP?

Filed under: Technology Resources, World Of Telecommunication — admin @ 9:42 am

It seems that nothing can stop the runaway success of VoIP. Driven by increasingly widely available low cost broadband Internet telephony has become one of the fastest-growing applications on the net. But apart from cheap calls in the UK, there are other factors which have contributed to this hugely popular way of making calls. There is clearly a trend toward more innovative and more mobile services and this looks likely to ensure that demand for VoIP continues to expand. It is estimated that there are already around four million VoIP users in the UK, not counting business subscriptions.
Key figures in the industry point to the advent of ADSL broadband connections that do not require line rental for a conventional phone line (naked ADSL), and number portability between conventional and IP phone services as the two key developments that will bring inflate the profile of VoIP to new levels.

In fact the effect VoIP has had has been so profound that some have suggested that it may not be long before users can get rid of their traditional landline telephones completely in favour of a broadband phone.

Taking a more pragmatic view, there are issues that will need to be addressed before that can happen. In the United Kingdom VoIP providers like Vonage or VoIPTalk will have to look closely at both security and ease of use, as well as continue to deliver a convenient and financially viable service. They certainly offer cheap calls already but, what else do they need to do to ensure a prosperous future for VoIP?
As the Internet is a huge public space the VoIP traffic is no more immune from attack than any other data. Security is a worry for many users, particularly in the business community and the means to increase protection for users would be a welcome step in securing the long-term future of VoIP.

The ease of use issue may not remain a hindrance to development now that handsets that work on mobile networks and, via WiFi or Bluetooth links, over VoIP are now taking their place in the shops. This raises the prospect of using cheap VoIP services at home, in the office or at a WiFi hotspot, but still retaining the flexibility of mobile coverage when out and about.

Some VoIP companies are now selling these handsets, and have set up joint arrangements with wireless hotspots so that their subscribers can make and receive calls when out and about without the need for a computer.

It’s likely that some of the restrictions of such handsets i.e. difficulties in hotspots that use web pages for authentication to be addressed very soon.

The advance of newer networking technologies will further reduce the gap between fixed, mobile and VoIP services. Wireless broadband services, in particular WiMax, could create city-wide wireless hotspots, making it possible to make mobile VoIP calls in much wider areas.

Cheap Gaming Laptops Most Likely around the Corner

Filed under: Technology Resources — admin @ 9:46 am

Until recently, gaming notebooks were normally custom made by special manufacturers. For the manufacturer they were hugely money spinning regardless of them not shipping in significant quantities. I’m pretty sure people would have loved to have possessed one however couldn’t seriously justify it. They were basically desktop computer replacements and the most powerful, best laptop computer you could obtain. Laptops for gaming would get everybody thrilled about what’s to be launched in a few years however I don’t think they would buy laptops like this whilst being aware the price is going to fall fast. The outlook for gaming laptop computers is now seen by the massive brands as a prime opportunity for themselves.

These are certainly high margin laptops for the global companies and they are aware of that. This could be an excellent way to generate respectable profits for them. In addition they are aware they can convince people to buy laptops like these more easily than small outfits. In my opinion this would really damage local retailers if they don’t separate themselves. In my opinion the big players will control the market trends. In addition customers just look to trust bigger companies greater.

I reckon they surely are launching some of the best laptops available to purchase. I guess that small system builders could still have a chance. Being able to purchase specifically what components they desire is a major factor for the majority people who are considering buying a gaming laptop computer. I think the guys that purchase laptops for gaming generally know what they are searching for. Customers like these are at times more worried about the functional capabilities of a system than they are in it’s design. From a customers perspective this is all a great trend. It will force prices to fall and make high end technology inexpensive for people. I predict even industry analysts will have a tough time observing where the market is going. New laptop releases should prolong expensive prices. It is tough to tell what will take place now that the big companies have gotten involved in making laptops for gaming.

Gaming Portables To Turn Mobile And Lightweight

Filed under: Technology Resources — admin @ 6:57 pm

The need for notebooks is sky high at present. It looks like the poor suppliers are also facing problems that could cause delays. Its actually amazing that financial circumstances and all haven’t dented this demand for laptop computers either. This is a business that is seeking to better on so many things all in one go so new directions and buzz is created all the time.

There seems to be a lot more choice and attainability of gaming laptops these days. Good gaming laptops can be brought relatively cheap for medium gaming needs. Playing games on laptops is indeed a reality now with the breakthroughs in technology. Compact components that perform better and are run cooler also means that gone are the days of the big notebooks for gaming. Despite all the positives of laptops, desktops should always run faster than them. Gaming laptops are the test of performance for the notebook computer trade and it will be exciting to see how the forthcoming technology ranks.

Speaking of gaming laptops, the greater choice are obtainable when they are custom built. On occasions, with larger companies the quality of the prime components is not that great. I fancy the fact that you can sometimes even ask for what parts you need. Laptops sold in retail are typically designed for the mass market and maybe this isn’t you. For the niche users, custom laptops fill the void. There are plenty of resellers selling custom laptops, with great customer service. I certainly feel this is a main factor that goes in favour for buying a laptop thats built to .

Cool is a word that comes to mind when thinking of the next line of notebook computers. The ultra low cost laptop niche seems to be creating all the exciting at this time. The Eee just created a new niche sector. I actually feel that we are bound to see ultra light 15″ laptops in the near future as well. There are laptops like this in the market already, just at big ticketdear prices. I’m sure we will see ultra light gaming laptops soon. I honestly don’t know what to await aside from those produtcs spoken about. Some company designing a gadget to be unique in a crowed market.

I’ve discovered what I feel are the best laptop computers.

Motion Detector Technology

Filed under: Technology Resources — admin @ 6:46 pm

Motion detectors are in use all around us in both residential and commercial locations. There are many common uses for motion detectors that most people find convenient and helpful in very common, everyday situations, and there will be some new and innovative uses that we may see more and more of in the future.

Residential Uses

Residential consumers are putting the motion detector to a variety of uses. They can greatly enhance the exterior lighting to any home and add to the security once inside.

If your concern is coming home to a dark house and tripping on the steps, motion detector controlled floodlights can create well-lit paths lighting up your yard, driveway, sidewalk and steps. This makes for a safe path to welcome both you and your guests. Floodlights should be mounted high up on the wall to keep the light out of your eyes and to illuminate a wider area for increased security. The same flood of light that walks you and your guests to your door safely will deter would-be-intruders. When the lights are triggered by motion this gives the impression that someone within the house is able to see and watch the burglar’s every movement.

Once inside, motion detectors placed in key areas can detect any violators and alert the proper authorities. Usually, one placed properly on the main floor and one on the lower level, if you have one, will serve as good traps. Stairways are often a good area to consider when placing the device, since you will be better able to prevent unauthorized passage from one floor to the next.

One innovative use in the home is to install an alarm or medical alert system that detects any health or safety issues with the elderly. Included is a motion detector that signals the central station if it does not detect activity for more than a certain number of hours. Once this alert has been made an operator can contact someone to look in on that elderly person.

Commercial Uses

Motion detector technology is being used in a variety of ways in the commercial world. Some of the more common uses can be found by taking a trip to the mall. As you approach the front entrance your presence is detected and the door slides open. Also, some stores place an invisible beam across the entrance that, when crossed, triggers a ringing bell. Later you decide to go to the bathroom and as you are finished and are preparing to exit the stall, sensors on the toilet detect that you are finished and the toilet automatically flushes for you. Then you approach the sink to wash your hands and the water turns on as you place your hands underneath the spout. Upon exiting the building the door opens up automatically once more to let you out. Finally, after hours the stores are all locked up and the motion detector security system is turned on to alert authorities on any intruder break-ins.

One innovative idea regarding motion detectors has been devised to suit the needs of car dealers. Occasionally, potential car buyers like to stroll around after hours looking at cars. To decipher between potential customers and thieves, streaming video and two-way audio are tied in with motion detectors. When the detector is tripped, a central station operator can take control of the camera, assess the situation, and take action if needed.

As you have just learned, motion detectors have a wide variety of uses to suit many different needs of various users. Since motion detectors are so versatile and have so many uses, they provide feelings of safety and security for the average homeowner as well as a large commercial establishment. Motion detectors have evolved a great deal over the last few years to incorporate more features that are useful to more people, and the development and expansion of motion detector technology and functions will continue to expand and grow to provide more ways to keep your home and businesses safe. What will they think of next?

My PDA, Myself

Filed under: Technology Resources — admin @ 8:55 pm

I used to be one of those people who kept everything in their
head. I prided myself on my ability to memorize phone numbers
and birthdays, and knew my schedule without writing anything in
a calendar.

Then I became a mom.

I am now one of the most forgetful people on the planet. I don’t
know if it’s due to the fact that I am no longer responsible for
just myself (keeping track of my schedule, my daughter’s
schedule, the school’s schedule, the play dates, the after
school lessons and more)… or if I lost brain cells during
pregnancy … but my short term memory has turned to mush. These
days, I need to write everything down… more than ever, now
that I have a business of my own.

I made but one resolution last year: To do a better job of
tracking my family’s schedule and recording my business
expenses. I started out great - I bought a spanking new
organizer with custom pages and pouches for receipts, stamps and
business cards. I kept a schedule for me and my family, wrote
down all my mileage (a must for tax purposes!) and tracked my
biz expenses…

…for about two months. The book was too big to fit in my bag,
it was heavy to carry - and I began leaving it at home more
often than not, which kind of defeated the purpose of having an
organizer at all. Then, I lost it and all the information it
contained.

So I bought another one. This time, I decided to go the deluxe
route. I headed to my local Franklin Covey store and purchased a
beautiful butternut leather book and pretty organizer pages,
which included Stephen Covey’s system on becoming more
effective. The whole package cost me about $100 - I figured if I
invested this much into it, I would be less apt to lose it.

I started writing down goals and tracking all of my business
tasks, and was feeling quite on top of things…

…for about two months. Once again, the biggest obstacle to
using the system was that it was too bulky and heavy to carry
with me everywhere. I looked with envy at friends who had
invested in electronic PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)
organizers - small, light-weight devices that sync up with your
computer and fit easily into a purse. That, I thought, would be
a solution - if only they were not so expensive.

Well, PDA’s are not so expensive any longer. With the
entry-level Palm model retailing at just $99, and Handspring
Visors available at similar cost, almost everyone can afford to
carry one now.

What to Look for in a PDA

There is a dizzying array of PDA models with various features,
so deciding which one you buy can be a confusing process. Since
a PDA is really just a small, hand-held computer, your buying
decision should be based on some of the same considerations you
make when purchasing a desktop system:

1. RAM 2. Speed 3. Expandability 4. Price

There are two major competing operating systems in the PDA
world. The most popular uses the system developed by Palm -
these include the Handspring Visor, the Sony Clie and of course,
the Palm Pilot. The other major OS is called PocketPC - this is
a Windows-based environment developed by Microsoft to compete
with Palm. It is somewhat easier to exchange information between
PocketPC handhelds and Windows based software - but at a price.
PocketPC requires more system resources - the popular Compaq
iPaq H3650 features a minimum of 32 MB of RAM, which makes these
devices slightly heavier and more expensive than the ones that
run the Palm OS.

The folks at ZDNet have created a guide to help you decide which
PDA models are best for you. While you’re there, you can view a
list of the most popular models and user reviews and even shop
online for the best prices:

Using Your New PDA

All PDA models come bundled with the two most important
organizing functions: Address book and Calendar. If you use
Microsoft Outlook on your desktop computer, you can import all
of your current entries with ease via your new handheld’s
syncing function.

Creating new entries is also a cinch. You have the option of
tapping an on-screen keyboard with your stylus or “writing” the
text using your device’s built-in handwriting function (called
“Graffiti” on Palm based systems). Graffiti takes a little bit
of getting used to, but it’s pretty easy to master. Most users
tend to fluctuate between the two entry systems.

There are thousands of third-party software programs that you
can download into your new PDA - many of them are free. My
personal favorite is AvantGo, which allows me to carry the movie
listings from every theater in my local area. These update
automatically whenever I sync my handheld to my desktop.

Each of the major PDA manufacturers carries software links.
You’ll also find much to choose from at these sites:

http://www.palmgear.com http://www.handango.com/
http://www.pilotzone.com/ http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/
http://www.memoware.com/

Bear in mind that you are limited by the amount of RAM included
in your device. If you find yourself running out, you should
look into adding a new memory module.

Technology writer Mark Kellner offers the following advice on
getting along with your new PDA:

1. Synchronize and backup at least once per day. 2. Watch your
batteries. The more inexpensive models tend to use AAA-sized
batteries - make sure you have a steady supply. 3. Protect your
device with a case. Chances are, your new PDA came with a
catalog of third party vendors offering a wide variety of
products. Check them out. 4. Get a screen protector. These are
thin sheets of plastic that use static to adhere to the screen.

I received my new Handspring Visor as a Christmas gift and I
love it. Because it fits right into my handbag without adding
much weight, it is as constant a companion as my wallet and
cellular phone. I’m trying out some expense tracking and vehicle
expense software, as well as a diet and exercise log and feel
good about my prospects of meeting this year’s resolutions…
I’ll let you know in a couple of months!
