Musicians Injuries: Discover The Chiropractic Advantage (Avoid Repetitive Strain Injury For Good!)

Ouch! Does it seem like every note you play on your guitar or musical instrument results in pain? Maybe it’s a nagging ache in your neck and shoulder. Perhaps you’ve had long rehearsals for that important gig or recital, and now you notice severe pain and loss of strength in your elbow and wrist. Or maybe you are trying to cope with hands that are increasingly numb and clumsy. Well it’s all part of being a serious musician, right? You’ve got to keep practicing - too much depends on it! Sound familiar?

Guitarists and instrumental musicians are a special risk group for repetitive strain injuries, with sizable percentages of them developing physical problems directly related to playing their instruments. In fact, “RSI” or repetitive strain injury in musicians was around centuries before the term was recently coined for computer injuries. Incorrect posture, overuse, stress, insufficient rest, excessive force and incorrect ergonomic technique all contribute to chronic pain and injuries that spell the end to careers. For many musicians, repetitive movement injuries are more feared than stage fright or an unresponsive audience. If they are also heavy computer users (my category of experience!), their risks are further compounded.

Doctors and therapists have long known that musicians are notoriously hard to convince that playing should be reduced or stopped to allow time for injuries to heal. Many guitarists and musicians are afraid to find out they might have a severe injury, and much prefer the head-in-sand approach of ignoring the pain and pushing on. This is a disastrous policy for a musician - if it hurts, it should be checked out!

As a systems accountant consulting to small business, I spend most hours of my working day in front of a computer. Not surprisingly, this has resulted in several serious repetitive motion injuries over the years. In similar fashion to the approach of many guitarists and musicians, I spent a long time trying to “ignore the pain and push on”. It is only in recent years that I have discovered the optimum program for managing the injuries and avoiding future repeats, with regular chiropractic care well and truly established at number one on my list of priorities.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Meaning “done by hand”, chiropractic is a method of restoring good health through adjustments of the spine. The basic chiropractic premise is that the spine and nervous system control the body completely. Any interference to nerve function by spine misalignments can therefore result in poor organ function, resulting in any number of seemingly unrelated diseases and ailments. Chiropractors generally subscribe to the theory that technically, they don’t ‘cure’ anybody, but simply help the body to heal itself.

In the past, chiropractors traditionally had trouble gaining the respect of medical doctors. Although basic philosophical differences between medicine and chiropractic still exist, chiropractic care is now considered mainstream and is routinely recommended by members of the medical profession.

WHAT TREATMENT DO CHIROPRACTORS GIVE?

Ever wondered what happens at the chiropractor? Perhaps you’ve heard they’re just “bonecrackers, not doctors!”. Not so.

In the US and many other countries, the educational program for chiropractors includes training in the basic medical sciences, including anatomy with human dissection, physiology, and biochemistry. Thorough training is also obtained in differential diagnosis, radiology and therapeutic techniques. This means, a doctor of chiropractic can both diagnose and treat patients. (This separates them from non-physician status providers, like physical therapists.)

As with all healthcare practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to secure the information needed for diagnosis and treatment. When the source of pain involves musculoskeletal structures, chiropractors manually manipulate or adjust the spinal column. This typically requires the chiropractor to bend and twist the patient into various positions, which may cause some patients (myself included!) to tense up. Other more gentle methods, such as the activator method, deliver a high-speed, gentle, thrust to the vertebrae via a small rubber tip.

Atlas orthogonal chiropractors focus on the atlas bone (the first bone that the spinal cord passes through). Using x-rays and precision measuring equipment, the atlas bone is gently realigned without using manipulation techniques. I can personally vouch for this chiropractic specialty, which worked like magic on the most recent and severe of my repetitive neck injuries.

Many chiropractors also use water, light, massage, ultrasound, electric, and heat therapy and may apply supports such as straps, taping and braces. They may also counsel patients about wellness concepts such as nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and stress management, but do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. Some chiropractors also specialise in orthopedics, sports and musician injuries, neurology, nutrition, internal disorders, and/or diagnostic imaging.

HOW CAN MUSICIANS BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC CARE?

The benefits of chiropractic care for guitarists and musicians are widespread and numerous. Chiropractors can help with relief of specific pain being experienced at the moment, or as part of an overall wellness program, which also includes exercise, proper nutrition and rest. Many musicians understand that the position they assume while playing stresses their body, and are seeking to offset this stress and prevent further problems from developing.

They teach their musician clients exercises to offset the repetitive stress placed on certain joints while playing a particular instrument.

Chiropractic care is reportedly simple, yet it is profound in its ability to help the body regain and maintain its health. Bob Birch, Elton John’s bass player and background vocalist said his chiropractor showed him pictures and told him “muscle stuff” that no other doctors ever did. Certain things that he had wrong with him, like the extensive pain in the left shoulder blade that shot up the side of his head (which other doctors pooh-poohed) were explained and put right with chiropractic adjustments.

Can Mozart Make You Smarter?

“Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the
soul.” While Plato reminds of us of musics’ ability to transcend
reality and logic, to speak to us in a dialect that only our
hearts understand, scarcely a person exists that hasn’t been
touched in some way by music. Indeed, if there is any universal
language, music would be it for all have experienced that
feelilng of being “lifted up,” even if the words are not
understood. Some even say that music and spirituality are
intertwined, and that the path to finding God can be found in
the bars of a composition. No matter what it does or is
considered to be, as Confucious so eloquently observed, “Music
produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do
without.” Where there has been people, music has coexisted, and
we need it to continue for without it we would all be in danger
of becoming robots operating by logic and necessity alone. We
find an outlet, a means of expressing and finding ourselves,
through music. Undoubtedly music is as critical to our
well-being as a roof over our heads . . . but does it offer more
to us than just the ability to feel? Does it, can it, actually
help us to learn?

The Mozart effect exploded in the early part of the 1990s. Upon
being told that Mozart was shown to help increase IQ test
levels, mothes everywhere rushed to Best Buy and Circuit City to
find CDs for their kids to listen to. The study was highly
publicized, and as a result, also highly capitalized. Numerous
cd and dvd sets were successfully marketed to parents. Mozart
probably hadn’t gotten that much attention since . . . well,
possibly never. Unfortunately, critics partially refuted the
results due to improper re-testing that was performed; however,
Mozart still has his believers and has been able to retain his
popularity in the midst of skepticism.

Many studies have been done on the effect that music has upon
not only our brains, but also our well-being in general. In
1968, a college student by the name of Dorothy Retallack
actually researched its effects on plants and found some
surprising results. After subjecting several houseplants to
specific genres of music, she documented her findings: jazz and
classical seemed were found to bring favorable benefits as
opposed to pop and country music. Most interesting of all,
though, is the fact that the plants that were forced to “listen”
to nothing but acid rock literally withered away and died! The
fact that music does indeed hold an influence over us is
undeniable.

Because research has indicated that it is the tempo of the
music, not the style, that actually aids in memory retention, a
learning “system” called the Baroque method has been given rise.
This is music that is heard at 60 BPM (beats per minute, or one
downbeat every second). It is the slow, complex rhythm that
stimulates and “warms up” the brain and in turn hugely increases
information retention by simultaneously activating the left and
right brain. Bulgarian psychologist George Lozanov was able to
prove that foreign languages could be learned at a fraction of
the normal time by using the Baroque method. Not only were his
students able to memorize vocublary at least twice as fast as
normal, but they also retained an amazing ninety-two percent.

We often overlook the brain in our quest for health and fitness,
but it should in fact be at the top of our lists. From the brain
stems everything that we are, and if we neglect to care for it
the “use it or lose it” phrase will become a reality. It needs
to be fed new activity on a daily basis, for the habits that we
form and act on consistenly offers it no food, in a sense.
Seeing new places, learning a new skill, and listening to
different kinds of music are all ways to strengthen and activate
your brain. And since music is the easiest one to change for
most of us, it’s a pretty good place to start–the key is to
listen to music that is complex and NOT repetitive because
musical repetition has actually been shown to stimulate an anger
response from the brain. While classical music is indeed a good
choice, anything that meets those criteria will have the same
effect; however, it is still a good idea to regularly introduce
new music because it is in the processing that your brain grows
and strengthens. So go ahead and pop in a Mozart cd. Seems like
the child prodigy knew more than we even know yet!

Chronic Heartburn

Heartburn is a burning pain starting behind the breastbone and radiating upwards. The hydrochloric acid from the stomach leaks into the esophagus and causes heartburn. Occasional heartburn due to rich food or other lifestyle causes is classified as mild or episodic. Heartburn occurring twice or more in a week is moderate or frequent. Everyday problems even with a proper diet and lifestyle is severe or chronic. Five to 15 percent of heartburn sufferers suffer from chronic heartburn.

Chronic heartburn is caused by the lower esophagus sphincter muscle tone becoming weak, or eroded by stomach acid, and the one-way valve is unable to seal the acid inside the stomach. It can also be caused by other factors like motility problems, high stress, the lining of esophagus becoming sensitive, and constant medication for other chronic conditions.

In some extreme cases, the mere act of bending down will bring acid into the esophagus. If the chronic condition prevails for long, it may lead to difficult conditions like difficulty in swallowing, coarseness of the throat, chronic laryngitis, respiratory problems like asthma or pneumonia, severe cough, and others.

Before chronic heartburn is diagnosed it is important to rule out more serious diseases which cause heartburn only as a symptom. These include hiatal hernia, GERD, peptic ulcer, gall bladder disease, gastritis and a tear in the esophagus. Investigation for these ailments needs extensive equipment and specialists.

Chronic heartburn is treated with strict lifestyle changes, which include modifying eating and sleeping habits, avoiding stress, stopping smoking, reducing weight, avoiding pressure on the stomach, and exercising.

Over-the-counter medication with antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors can be used as short- and medium-term relief from heartburn. But the major goal of the physician will be to prescribe and manage it in the long term.

Treatment for chronic heartburn involves total commitment from the patient to comply with the physician’s advice and take the prescribed medication until the physician stops it. If all else fails to overcome chronic heartburn, surgery may be the last resort. This is done to tighten the LES muscles and prevent acid from leaking into the esophagus.

Caring vs. Caring Too Much

DEFINITIONS

Caring - Being concerned about outcomes; paying just enough attention but not too much; to feel trouble or anxiety; to feel interest or concern. To overlook the progress of others and projects, but to have faith and confidence in other people to look after themselves and do things well enough.

Caring too much - Being too concerned about outcomes; paying too much attention; feeling too troubled or anxious; feeling overly concerned; not believing other people are competent and capable. Hovering over them and transmitting your anxiety to them so they become dysfunctional.

COMPARISONS

Supervising a project vs. Hovering over the person

Being concerned about someone and interested in the outcome vs. Worrying anxiously over someone and trying to take over.

Managing vs. Controlling

Transmitting emotions of confidence and self-assurance v. Transmitting fear, worry and anxiety

EXAMPLE

Alice cared about the outcome of the project and made herself available to the team for input and supervision. She had high emotional intelligence and was flexible and creative in planning and outcomes. She delegated easily and well. Because of this, the team worked well, and had the stamina to finish in style with plenty of energy left over for the next project. Everyone enjoyed working with Alice because she brought out the best in them and they built their self-esteem by completing successful projects.

Harry was overly concerned about the project. He was critical and demanding of himself and others and had low emotional intelligence. He could not be satisfied with less than perfection and drove himself and others. He hovered over everyone which destroyed their self-confidence, confused them, and pulled their focus away from the work. His worry caused them to worry and undermined their self-confidence. As the “primal leader,” he transmitted his anxiety to others. Every team and project he drove this way became cynical, insecure, exhausted and burnt out. No one wanted to work with him or under him, and the best people would transfer out of his department. Eventually he was fired.

KEY POINT

When you become overly concerned and caring, you cross a line into what’s called an overdriven striving. You focus on it too much and can affect your own thinking and functioning, as well as that of others. You demand too much and usually get too little. It’s exhausting to everyone concerned.
